River Information - -
Before reading the river reports below we advise you to read the Bank Safety page. Also these are not official reports on the Rivers but merely our views. Remember kayaking is an assumed risk sport. People who do this, do so at their own risk
Name: River Bann
Length: 6 km
Grade: 2 to –3 in high water
Get In: Banbridge Hockey Club
Get Out: Tullylish Bridge beside the Church

The upper Bann depends on rain and needs at least 8hr’s to raise it to a decent level.
The get in the Hockey club has ample parking space and a great little public bridge to check if the water is high enough. You can check if it is high enough by the waves just downstream of the bridge. If these are not there then it is probably not worth running. These are deep and cartwheeling is easy here as well as most freestyle moves. However the more rain the higher these get and the better they become.
There are a few small drops, which won’t be there in very high water, which are of no concern. Soon you come to a flat water section just after with houses to your right. A fish ladder weir is next. Do not shoot the fish ladder in the middle, as there is an offending tyre in the middle, which you may get stuck in.
Shoot this weir either river Left or Right of the middle fish ladder. The river Right side has a small eddy as well as there being one behind the fish ladder itself.
Aim for these as you will be swept downstream and will have to walk back up to this weir. In high water this produces a great surfing wave for flat spins.
On down is a weir that can be nasty on river Left hand side and also there is a sharp rock about 1.5m from river Right, which can catch out the unwary. Shoot this in the middle. On the river Left bank there is a great place for having lunch and gives you an opportunity to walk up the bank and re-shoot the weir again.
Just downstream of this there is a horseshoe weir, which in high water produces a nasty stopper and beginners should be wary of this when they try some stopper work. However safety can be set up on the river Right. Freestyler’s can try their splats and splat wheel’s here.
A rocky section proceeds until you come to a small drop on river Right which has a recycling eddy service to a deepish flow for tail squirt’s and cartwheeling. However watch out for the overhanging try, which may cause some difficulty in very high water. If you do play here play halfway down the flow, as there is a rock just at the top, which prohibits play.
After this is another section of small rapids which, may go on for about ½ a km.
Then comes what used to be known as the Boat breaker. However all the boulders have been removed from the weir and all that has been left are 4 small pool drops. This weir can be shot anywhere however the pool drops are the best option if you don’t want to scrape your boat. Watch out for the inconspicuous stopper right at the bottom of the pool drops which will hold most boats that go into it to play. It is very shallow and nasty. More small rapids follow until you get to the slide weir at Laurence Town. This can be shot anywhere.
Egress can be made from the river at this point as you come to a small beach on river Left with a car park at the top. You will spot this place as you come through the bridge just after the slide weir you have done. You will see a Church at the top beside the car park. Continuing onto Tullylish you will go through 3 smallish waves, which are surf able in high water. After this there is a medium sized weir with a large house on river Right. Shoot this just river Right of the middle. More small rapids follow until you get to a diagonal weir which in high flows can be dangerous and should be inspected form the river Left bank. You should generally shoot this through the middle to the river Left and half way down head for river Right.
More small rapids follow until you come to the biggest weir on this section however it is one of the easiest to run. You can inspect the weir from river Right and you can also shoot it from there if you wish however most people will shoot this weir just river Left of the cock’s tail.
Just round the corner are two large holes which, should be avoided in low and very high water. Head river Right of these or if you are really keen just slightly river Left.
These have been the seen of many a swim and a pinning on the shallow parts.
You have been warned!
Again more small rapids until you come to the last section were you can see the church on river Left not too far off in the distance. This is the final rapid. The first part can be run through the middle but when you get round the corner in very high water there is a messy rapid with a hole in the middle. This hole only occurs in higher water and even then is not usually nasty. You are then at the get out as you get to the other side of the bridge where you can egress on river Left. Watch out the bank is steep and slippy and a throw rope from the top to the get gear up might be a good idea. Begginers should try there rolls in the safe deep water here beside the bank and Freestyler’s can do loop’s or cartwheels here as the flow is deep and strong in high water.

N.B:
Also please pay consideration that the egress at Tullylish is a cemetery and parking should be done somewhere past the Church itself to stop any hassle with those parking there to use the church.
