The best time to paddle this river is after heavy downpours. You
need to check the level at Raleagh Bridge where there are spray
paint lines just on the left hand side upstream of the bridge.
The largest rapid is at Raleagh Bridge 1 below the start. This can
be inspected from Raleagh Bridge itself. This rapid has a massive
wave in the right conditions, which you can do most things on and
in higher water there is a massive boil + whirlpool just behind
this, which can deal out some surprising beatings.
Beware of wire across the river below the bridge itself. Further
downstream watch out for a vertical weir below an island.
There is a sign on river left heralding the danger of this weir.
It has a considerable tow back on this drop even in low/medium levels.
There are 3 bridges across the river at various points so that a
shorter trip can be arranged. Be aware of these bridges as they
may have debris around the stanchions due to frequent flooding.
2 km below Kilmore Bridge the river becomes easier but still has
a couple of weirs and sections of standing waves. In Higher water
one of these small drops becomes a very sticky hole with a sub-station
with railings around it, which is on river right and may be inspected
should it be runable at the level you have chosen to run it. At
Annacloy the river changes name to the Quoile. |
